Valve today announced that Portal 2 owners will be treated to a free DLC toolkit that will allow levels to be created by everyone. The download, called 'The Perpetual Testing Initiative' will be available on both PC and Mac, but there's no word on whether the toolkit will be extended to Xbox 360 or PS3 owners (most likely not). The puzzle maker will allow Portal 2 owners both to create new levels, and to share those levels with other players. The Steam Workshop will play host to the user created levels, and players will be able to search for new challenges there and post reviews of levels that they play.
As you can see in the videos below from E3 2010, there are several worthy additions to Portal in Portal 2, including several new play surfaces. What do I mean by 'play surfaces'? Through each puzzle / room, there is the opportunity to dump a substance on the ground. Some substances / paints will make you go dizzingly fast, some help you bounce through the air, and so on. There's also a variety of new ways of getting through a level, using suction and wind, a laster tunnel (you'll have to see it to understand), and a whole lot more. People using The Perpetual Testing Initiative will be able to use these new surface modifiers to make levels play with an infinite amo. . .
Looks like Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will be set in the future, featuring fighting robots and futuristic planes. Black Ops 2 will be the third high profile, high budget futuristic shooter on tap for this Holiday season, with Halo 4 and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier also being released in the Fall. How different is Call of Duty Black Ops 2 from its competition? Check out the trailer below to see the first footage of Black Ops 2 and decide for yourself.
Alex Mason's son, David Mason, will be the protagonist in this game, with similar flashback-style story elements. Specifically, there will be a flashback to Afganistan in the 80s, riding horseback. This will be another globe trotting adventure for the Mason family, with China, Washington, and New York all being attacked at one point or another in the game.
The trailer for Black Ops II was first shown during the NBA playoff game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Denver Nuggets on TNT.
Activision's CEO said today: 'No one is going to be able to call this Black Ops 1.5. There's a lot of new stuff in this game. There's a lot of new ideas. We are going for it. We are taking some risks.'
While this may be true, as mentioned above, the game does have plenty of futuristic company this year. Given that Call of Duty has been to World War II, Vietnam, the 80s, the present day, and the day after t. . .
A German court has issued an injunction against sale of the Xbox 360, Windows 7, and other Microsoft products. Judge Holger Kircher of the Mannheim Regional Court granted the injunction based on the findings of the International Trade Commission last week that Motorola patents were being violated by Microsoft.
This does not mean that the Xbox 360 will be banned immediately in Germany, because Microsoft has stated that they will immediately appeal the ruling. During the appeal, Microsoft is able to continue selling the Xbox 360. Likewise, a US court has ruled that product sale in Germany can not be affected until the case is fully decided in America (given that the companies are based in the US). So for the time being, the Xbox 360 will continue to be sold in Germany.
Last week, it was the finding of the International Trade Commission that Microsoft has violated four of Motorola's patents. Of the four patents found to be infringed, three of them are essential to the use of the Xbox, and should fall under FRAND (fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory) licensing, meaning that Motorola is all but required to license the patents at a reasonable rate. These patents include Wi-Fi and video decoding patents.
The rulings here are not final, however, Motorola's goal in the suit is apparently to force a settlement, by attempting to block Xbox exports. Motorola has demanded a 2.25% royalty on all Xboxe. . .
Today the world has lost musical pioneer Adam 'MCA' Yauch, founder of the instantly-recognizable Beastie Boys. Hearing such sad news is never easy, but it does gives us an opportunity to recall fond memories of Mr. Yauch's truly unique work. The Beastie Boys accomplishments transcended the music industry and even gained them celebrity in the gaming world.
Back in the mid '90s, Midway games released NBA Jam Tournament Edition (NBA Jam T.E.) which was so full of easter eggs it made the Easter Bunny faint. Among the wild cast of unlockable characters were none other than Adam andldquo;MCAandrdquo; Yauch and his fellow Beastie Boys. In order to unlock Mr. Yauch the player needed to enter a different code depending on the particular system. The Beastie Boys were featured in each edition of the game including on the PC, Sega 32X, Sega Game Gear, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Sega Saturn, and Sony Playstation.
The Beastie Boys made their triumphant return to the court as playable characters in NBA Street V3, developed and released by EA Games in 2004. NBA Street V3 also included Beastie Boys hit andldquo; An Open Letter To NYCandrdquo; on the soundtrack andndash; a song from their sixth album andldquo; To the 5 Boroughsandrdquo; which Adam andldquo;MCAandrdquo; Yauch wrote and produced.
But hold on, there are plenty more Beastie Boy cameos where those came from...

Nintendo's Wii sales are down considerably, which has caused Nintendo to post their first loss ever. Nintendo lost about $533 million, on weaker than expected Wii sales, and a strong yen. Nintendo sold 9.8 million Wii systems, down from over 15 million sold last year. Nintendo is expecting to return to profitability in fiscal 2012, thanks to a weakening yen.
Nintendo's Wii sales are a strong indication that this generation of systems is over; the Wii U is expected to usher in a new generation of consoles, and help their ailing console sales. Likewise, Apple's iPhone and iPad sales are taking a big bite out of the company's bottom line, as their traditional model for portable systems is changing dramatically. Cutting the price of the 3DS cut into Nintendo's bottom line significantly.
This comes just a day after Nintendo announced upgrades and new games for their newest portable system, the Nintendo 3DS.
Nintendo's Satoru Iwata has announced during the Nintendo Direct conference that folders are coming to the 3DS homescreen. The new firmware was released on April 25th.
Nintendo is working quickly to address as many difficulties as possible with the homescreen. Each folder can contain up to 60 items.

New Super Mario Brothers 2 and Wii U Games To Be Sold Digitally (04/27/2012)Fri, 27 Apr 2012 12:56:09 GMT
Nintendo announced during their earnings call that developers will be able to release games simultaneously on the Wii U store and retail. Not only is the Wii U Store getting this same-day treatment, but soon, the Nintendo 3DS will also see games released simultaneously in retail as download through the eShop. This functionality is to begin some time in August for 3DS games.
Nintendo also stated that this eShop move will allow game developers / publishers to have some pricing flexibility. It's assumed that games released digitally will be available at wholesale prices.

It appears that gamers will soon be able to play PlayStation One titles on their PlayStation Vita. The functionality, which runs through the Vita's PSP emulator, will allow Sony to sell PlayStation games for Vita in the PlayStation Store - and this is, in fact, what has already happened.
The other night, the PlayStation game Buzz Lightyear of Star Command appeared in the UK PlayStation Store; users bought the game and tried to play it, but the PlayStation game failed to function. Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Worldwide Studios president, confirmed that the feature is coming, via Twitter. He tweeted 'Our engineers are working hard on it, please be patient.'
This caps off a rather busy week for the PlayStation Vita.
Earlier this week, Sony Announced that Skype is available on the PlayStation Vita (PSVita) starting some time on Tuesday. Skype allows PS Vita users to make both video calls and voice calls to other Skype users. Additionally, for about 2 cents a minute, PS Vita users can use their Vita to make voice calls to landlines (cost estimated).
Sony launched the PlayStation Vita at $249 at launch for the WiFi version, and $299 for the 3G version of the system. This announcement was greeted with applause at the Sony E3 Press Conference, and today, near-cell-phone capabilities have been introduced for the system.

Also demonstrated during Nintendo Direct was the new Animal Crossing game, New Super Mario Brothers 2. On the Wii, a new Kirby collection was demonstrated.
Nintendo has been relying heavily on price cuts and remakes of classic titles on their latest handheld system, to make up for their slow launch. Their continued improvement is a good sign.
Some of the classics already released for the 3DS include:
Mario Kart, which allows players to hang glide, move underwater, and more. Mario Kart for the 3DS was all new, and a good addition to the series.
Star Fox also has been released. It's a straight port of the classic title, but plays in full 3D.
Super Mario Land 3D is a ground breaking title available for the Nintendo 3DS. Super Mario 3D Land was created entirely from scratch for the Nintendo 3DS. While Nintendo faced some Peta backlash about the Tanooki Suit on display in the game, it was a Holiday smash hit, lauded by critics and players alike..

During a podcast interview with Seven Day Cooldown, Valve confirmed that they are working on hardware for the home market. Gabe Newell has confirmed that he desires this new hardware platform to be both present in the mobile space and in home use - as an alternative to the closed ecosystems available from traditional console / device manufacturers such as Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, and Apple. No word yet on what technology would be included in the platform, but Newell stated on the podcast that it would be 'out there'.
Steam is quickly becoming the PC gaming client / store of choice, with over 25 million users, over 1000 games available for purchase, 12 billion player-minutes of game time logged, and more significantly, every month, users have the Steam client open for more than 75 billion minutes.
Clearly, the Steam client user experience is a very important one for PC gamers - along with a personal achievements system, Steam frequently acts as a matchmaking service and a voice service for players. However, oddly, while Valve commented on an open platform for games, they did not directly state that Steam would reside on this platform. It's hard to imagine a world where this wouldn't happen, however.
As far as Valve's competition in this market:
'They build a shiny sparkling thing that attracts users and then they control people's access to those things, it's ominous. . .

Sony says that virtually every major publisher has signed up for developing against the PS Vita, and with today's announcement, even other console manufacturers seem to be getting in on the act (Skype is owned by Microsoft).

Microsoft responded 'We remain confident the Commission will ultimately rule in Microsoft's favor in this case and that Motorola will be held to its promise to make its standard essential patents available on fair and reasonable terms.'

Sledgehammer's Modern Warfare 3 has a Double XP weekend this weekend; players are looking for as many cheats, tips, tricks, and strategies as they can. We have compiled a quick list of important strategies for the game that will help you stay alive in Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer matchmaking. This strategy guide for Modern Warfare 3 is being created with the lower levels of play in mind. The idea is to get players acclimated to Modern Warfare 3 quickly, so that they die less and are perhaps less of a burden to their teammates. :)
Multiplayer in Modern Warfare 3 is divided into two sections. The co-op mode (Spec Op) is a series of survival missions that you and one other person can play. There are 20+ missions in this mode. It's played out in bite sized chunks, and is against varying levels of bots. The mode is useful for unlocking some easy achievements. The mode that this guide focuses on, however, is the versus multiplayer matches that make up the bulk of network play (PSN, Xbox Live, or PC) for Modern Warfare 3.
Here are some simple strategies to follow in the multiplayer mode of Modern Warfare 3.
Campy Campers Have The Last Laugh
Modern Warfare 3 does not reward players that rush out into the open, unless you've set up your classes in a specific way. In fact, your main objective during your first few levels will be to seek out. . .
