Song: YACHT - I'll Be Your Mirror (Velvet Underground Cover) [download here]

What's so good?

I didn’t think it was possible to make the Velvet Underground sound even more badass than they normally do. But Yacht’s cover of the 1966 Nico-led classic is pure magic – synthy blips and and thrumming back beat add a cool modernity to the smokey, sexy track (following their cover of Bridgette Fontaine’s 1969 song "Le Goudron").

This version remains largely close to the original, with a more upbeat tempo and a layered sonic feel. So, now when you dress up like Nico and dance around your room, you have a tune to go with your moves. I mean… who does that? I don’t. Ahem.

What's so good?

Disco Fries do a good old fashioned remix of Avicii’s "Silhouettes."

There’s nothing particularly revolutionary here, but that shouldn’t downplay the fact that this is a very well done remix.

The original was released back in 2011 and labeled as "perfect house music" by the blog Earplugs Not Included. Pretty sure that Disco Fries have reinforced that assessment.

What's so good?

Beat Connection’s new single "The Palace Garden, 4am" carves a beautiful landscape of dream pop magic.

Fronted by Jordan Koplowitz and Reed Juenger, this is the band’s first "official" single off their debut LP The Palace Garden, though it’s actually the second song we’ve heard off the album (the first was "Think/Feel").

The song will be released June 19th, along with a B-side titled "Lotus Blossom." If I were a betting man, I’d wager that we’ll actually hear that song before the vinyl release. Will keep you posted!

What's so good?

Ladies & gents, please welcome Emily Wells to Indie Shuffle. She is an insanely talented one-woman band from L.A. Here, Emily premieres her new song "Come To Me" at BreakThru TV Studios in Brooklyn. You don’t want to miss this.

Since it started off simply, I was intrigued by where she’d take the song. A catchy keyboard chord and raspy vocals set the tone. The comes the infectious beat, tambourine, and violin all being intricately looped. Halfway through the song I was amazed. This girl is a one-woman band, and it’s flawless… effortless. She gives me the chills. To watch her work and construct a song as she goes is one of the most engaging performances I’ve seen in awhile. And the music is unique, yet catchy. Think hip-hop meets classical meets folk.

Emily Wells’ newest album, Mama, is available to enjoy right now. So what are you waiting for? This girl is a gem.

Touche, Chameo. The 22-year-old  electronic producing wizard from Copenhagen, Denmark just sent me this fantastic new "hip-hop summer house" track as he describes it on his Soundcloud. With the ridiculously awesome "WOW" already to his name, I am not surprised that this original mix is a "banger" that has me itching for the dancefloor and some break-away pants.

In an over-saturated EDM market, it’s refreshing to hear original mixes from young producers that don’t just stand out, but straight up raise the bar. Chameo is only getter better, so I suggest you get your season tickets now. Don’t sleep on him, and don’t say I didn’t warn you.

In general, I didn’t think that "Hollywood" was too fantastic of a song. It certainly has a bit of pop to it, but frankly was received a lot better than I had expected. Something tells me the same hype is going to surround this one…

"Spitfire" is without a doubt one of the strongest electronic tracks I’ve heard this year. And, given that it was unleashed late in 2011, I’m not entirely sure I can say that. Regardless, why this didn’t get a whole lot more attention…well, here I am trying to breathe some more life into it!

text Mosman Alder: Burn Bright (Exclusive EP Stream)
Thu, 24 May 2012 14:16:11 +0000

Exciting times ahead for Brisbane’s Mosman Alder, with their debut EP Burn Bright due for release on May 25. Since reviewing the EP’s first single "Raisin Heart" last month, Indie Shuffle has become one of the band’s biggest supporters – so much so that they have given us an exclusive sneak-peak stream of Burn Bright.

The EP itself almost never happened, with Queensland hit by terrible floods during its creation. Thankfully, the band pushed through, with Burn Bright all the more special because of it. Having had to complete odd jobs for studio time, the EP was then finished off by producer Tony Espie (the Avalanches) for mixing. The outcome is five tracks of brooding exquisiteness — but despite the dark nature of the tracks, the EP is oddly elevating.

As soon as you hear the first heartrending chords of opening track "Jasmine," you’ll be hooked. Lyrically, the EP is storytelling at its best, lead-singer Valdis Valodze stating "I found it more interesting to tell stories." This imagination is evident in each track. All the facets of the band contribute to Burn Bright‘s beauty – whether it be Valodze’s baritone vocals, the stirring percussion and piano segments, or Robyn Dawson’s violin accompaniment. "Raisin Heart" is still a favorite, but "The Ice Queen of Silver Screen" and especially "These Hands" have been underlined (by me) as highlights. The latter is Mosman Alder at their best, with soaring vocals, despairing strings and hovering guitar erratically shifting throughout.

With a birth at this year’s Splendour in the Grass Festival, they’re also setting off on their own Australian tour. I cannot speak highly enough of this group.

Gush over.

Song: Yacht - Le Goudron (Long Version) [download here]

What's so good?

Who doesn’t love the French? French fries, French toast, French music – pretty much all good things. Portland-based Yacht apparently agrees, recently covering French singer Brigitte Fontaine’s 1969 track "Le Goudron."

Bringing a funky, deep synth melody to the aloof original, Yacht takes this track from the lounge to an intense party. Distinctly LCD in length and build, the long version is epic in proportion, building segment by segment. Just when you think things are dying down for the evening, Yacht slaps up the beat with a franticly complex finish. The PNW duo brings an eclectic nature to the song, which I feel Brigitte Fontaine would fully dig.

The single was originally released on DFA last April, with a bunch of remixes and this novel of a track just being uploaded onto their Soundcloud this week.

What's so good?

For a couple of guys with classical music backgrounds, Western Australian duo Sun City make anything but traditional music. Longtime friends who met in high school, Tobias John and Daniel Mackey have been collaborating since early 2011. They released their self-titled debut EP in September 2011, and they’re gearing up to release a second. To help you bide the time, here’s "City Lights" from their first EP.

"City Lights" is all about sun-drenched synth hooks and large basslines. This formula has been done before (think the Naked and Famous or fellow Western Australians Tim and Jean), but what does it matter if it’s a good track?

Look for more of the same in August when their new EP is due — you’ll be hearing a lot more from Sun City no doubt.

What's so good?

Hurry! Put on your dancing shoes and put this track on rotate! The Young Midnight remix of Sleep Party People’s "Heavy Burden" is super charged and ready to roll.

This particular remix is the work of Twin Shadow’s former bassist, Russ Manning (aka Young Midnight). He has drenched "Heavy Burden" with spotty, ragged synths and beats, all deconstructed into a fast-paced dance number that’s sure to make you want to move. The combination of smooth, airy vocals with intergalactic electronics makes for a hypnotizing contrast between ethereal and industrial. There’s a touch of new wave, a touch of indie pop, and a tinge of dreamwave — which is a style that we’re seeing and hearing more and more of these days. This genre-hopping approach leaves a lot of room for experimentation and rule breaking.

It looks like Young Midnight is on a roll, remixing a handful of up-and-coming acts such as Doe Paoro & Zombri. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for any new and energetic releases from Young Midnight!

What's so good?

Nothing can hold Lucius down — not even being burglarized of basically all of their musical equipment last month. But Lucius is back with an amazing live studio session/interview that showcases their undeniable talent and charm!

The video opens up with Lucius’ track, "Don’t Just Sit There," a powerful yet delicate ballad about love and loss. The harmonies are luscious, and the instruments twinkling and infectiously catchy. There’s a breakdown in the middle of the song that oozes with twang and bluesy doo-wop. It then wraps back around to an anthemic chorus. You’ll probably have it stuck in your head after you watch this video.

Next up is the short but sweet interview which touches upon various topics, such as their epic residence in Brooklyn (an artist co-op of sorts) and their always-dapper and classy appearance. I don’t want to give too much away, but I highly suggest you watch the entire video to fully absorb Lucius doing what they do best.

Song: Parachute Youth - Can't Get Better Than This [download here]

What's so good?

After a chance meeting at a party a few years back, Matthew Gill and Johnny Courtidis have been somewhat inseparable. Hailing from Sydney and Adelaide respectively, the two decided to take their show on the road, with Paris their port of call.

Their track, "Can’t Get Better Than This," was actually made years ago, but the magnetic final cut and resulting video (which has already seen over 1.5 million hits) have taken off in recent months.

"Can’t Get Better Than This" has a definite Euro vibe, something that would get a fair bit of play in one of the mega-clubs. And yet, it’s still got a contemporary feel to it. The heavy basslines and throbbing synth combine nicely with the echoing vocals. This isn’t usually my preferred genre, but there’s something about this track which sticks with me – while it’s catchy, there’s some longevity to it.

Keep an eye peeled for a follow up to "Can’t Get Better Than This" and catch them live in Australia (and possibly abroad) soon.

Bursting with awesome indie rock a la a mellow Foals, "Colour Fade" is a stand-out track that will do well to put Funeral Suits on the map. Song: Tango in the Attic - Easybones (Inspired Flight Remix) [download here]

What's so good?

Jordan Craig, Jonathan McFarlane, James Crook and Paul Johnson, all from Glenrothes, formed Tango in the Attic in 2008. Two years later they released their debut album Bank Place Locomotive Society which BBC 1 lauded as their Record of the Month.

Since then the band has ventured around on their own agendas, releasing a bit of music here and there but nothing as substantial as that debut album, at least until recently. They have a forthcoming album, from which two singles and a video have been released. Sellotape represents a progression in the band’s sound, opting for heavier use of reverb and compression that results in noisier recordings than previous works. Whilst it makes use of a much wider variety of sound sources, it still retains a their signature lo-fi quality. Lyrically, many of the songs explore the ups and downs of family relationships from a range of perspectives, a trend reflected in the albums artwork.

Today they are releasing the latest song off of the forthcoming album "Easybones (Inspired Flight Remix)." Contrary to the previous two singles, this is a remix — an uncommon medium for an early single. Yet the remix is clearly tailored in the band’s interests, easily mistaken for just another one of their tracks. It isn’t until about halfway through when you realize that you aren’t listening to the original, as the track takes a dancy ride to the other side.

A relaxing ride from start to finish, Inspired Flight’s remix of "Easybones" does Tango in the Attic justice, and has us eagerly awaiting the upcoming album release (dropping on the 28th).

Port St. Willow is Nick Principe’s solo project, and it’s quite the gorgeous one. Don’t let this Brooklynite fool you — his music is as lush and fresh as a newly sprouted forest in the spring time, and his debut LP Holiday is overwhelming.

It’s almost as if there’s an awakened spirit that rises up within this album… as if Port St. Willow is summoning a deeply spiritual being to carry out the task of creating such a beautifully orchestral piece of music. The style that Nick Principe emulates translates into a wildly nuanced piece of art.

Throughout this album, there are humming sounds in the background, twinkling guitars, deeply stretched synths, and — of course — an incredibly gorgeous falsetto. This is album may be what outer space sounds like at peace.

What's so good?

This track caught me seriously by surprise. I was so enraptured when I first heard it that I pulled over on a busy highway to find out what it was.

The song I’m talking about is "Avalanches" by Brisbane band Founds. Having been together for just over a year, the six-piece is currently finishing their debut album Hadean, which will be released in the coming months.

"Avalanches" is a captivating, mesmerising track – more likely to be made in Scandinavia and not in the Queensland tropics. Subtle to start, with dreamy female vocals drifting alongside glittering synth, the track grows steadily before culminating in a wave of percussion, strings, and keys. The horn section adds to the eclectic nature of this track with spectacular results.

While they’re still quite fresh, they’ve already supported Grouplove and the Naked and Famous as well as performing at the Big Day Out Festival. This is not the sort of music we’re used to being created in Australia, and this makes it even more special.
