By now some of you may have seen, or heard about the laser cutter VPG have acquired.

Whilst a couple of goof balls running the laser cutter is one thing. Seeing this:

Is another!  The easy of punch, the quality of the corners and the thickness of counters is pun intended a "game changer".

Rather than labor the…

I just completed the playthrough of the first Scenario in 2nd Fleet. Pitting a pair of Soviet missile ships against NATO's STANAVFORLANT and an amphibious group, I played via Vassal.

As I was writing the AAR, I was clicking furiously through the Vassal logfiles. Thinking it was a pretty kool animation, I produced the video below. I hope you enjoy it!

(It might be better to view it directly on YouTube for HD quality)

text Dominant Species, quite a game!
2012-05-21T00:00:00.000Z

First play was great, looking forward to another round of Dominant Species

Had to oppotunity to play Dominant Species for the first time last night. Joel, Kris, and Dave came over with Joel brining the game and handling the instruction for us noobs. One of the few times all of us have been able to play together outside of our usual haunt over at

Fair…

Below is a photo of the final disposition of the units in the immediate vicinity of Omaha.  I'm sure I broke several rules or at least the intent of some of them, even during the structured landing phase.  Please bear with me.

Phase 1.  All units except the DD tanks make it to shore.  Thank goodness for drift, or several infantry companies would not have made it.  I had two DD tank units scheduled to come ashore during Phase 1, but none of them did.  Yikes!  During the…

Ok, so I have punched and set up the Omaha Beach introductory scenario.  Below is my initial setup.  I'm a little confused about the setup, but here it is.  Let's see how the invasion turns out.  …

Another year of my Vassal game with Norman has been completed.

Further year of mixed fortunes for Allies.

text Golden Horde.
2012-05-18T20:25:48.000Z

I'm hoping this will be better than the last disaster from ATO from Bergs MoI series. - Suliman .....At least the art and the counters are functional.

This battle is somewhat seminal in that it showed (hopefully I play well) that the Mongols can be thwarted by heavy troops and discipline. Add a dash of very favorable terrain and Berg is your…

text Issue 1: Rusted Dice Magazine
2012-05-15T08:21:28.000Z
Our first three months have been a real blast and we thought that it would be fun to put some of the points raised in our fireside chat audio episodes in to a magazine format.  Thus we are proud to announce the first issue of Rusted Dice Magazine. It is free, on-line, and you can easily access it by clicking the 'front page'…

text Angry with OCS Burma
2012-05-15T06:30:03.000Z

I'm a little pissed off with OCS Burma at the moment.

I've been playing two games of the U-Go scenario simultaneously, one game (as the Japanese) slightly ahead of the other (as the Allies). The Japanese rarely have numerical advantage, but they have an AR advantage. They slip through the mountains and put the Allies in difficult defensive positions, but ultimately at some stage they need to attack the allies in order to 'press through' their lines (up to this point they can forage…

text Nuklear Winter '68 demo success!
2012-05-15T04:14:36.000Z

I ran a demo/practise game of LnL's "Nuklear Winter '68" at the local game shop. The patrons are more of a eurogamer/tabletop miniatures breed, but I think its time for them to be made aware of the Hex&counter scene as well.

It went really well. We played the........ bugger, can't remember the…

text Oh...and Yeah
2012-05-14T14:31:26.000Z

I am currently recovering from the latest hip replacement (BOTH are now steel/polymer/porcelin contraptions). And I have to do the PT -on my own; HA! It's a good thing that I was an NCO, otherwise that would never happen- and just simply ....heal ? recover?... but even now, the VA and I are talking about which knee would I like

Wargames come into their own, at times like this.  As bad and as weird as it feels to have a major part of my body now…

2012-05-14T14:03:57.000Z

.....Because Life The Universe, and EVERYTHING says so.....

I had "World at War #22 Minsk '44, Set up and Playing it (5th Gds Tanks Corps bounced off 5th Pz Div, but the Soviets went screaming through the south, aiming for Minsk - I had merely KG Anhalt down there- and the reinforcemtn rolls for the Germans were Horrible....

text Battle of Moscow version 1.2
2012-05-11T13:31:46.000Z

Battle of Moscow version 1.2 is now available at war-game-programming.com. This version incorporates a number of suggestions from Chris Gammon while fixing some bugs he found.

* Automatic game save at start of each phase. Disabled manual game save.

* Gameload() opens to save folder

* Fixed Exit game save crash (hopefully).

* Fixed restart phase button and start hex issues.

* Added a Confirm…

text Computer SFGE Project Update
2012-05-11T13:28:27.000Z

SFGE is now at version 0.50. No real new features but plenty of important bug fixes. The game still lacks a setup phase and scenarios but I believed all rules and other required features have been implemented. There's still quite a few  'nice to have' features that I plan to implement in the next couple of weeks.

Automating the Chaos forces really speeds up game play.   A 10 turn game takes about an 45-90 minutes. The increase resource option seems to be really powerful, assuming I…

text Burma learning combat real time.
2012-05-11T04:09:20.000Z

Original Post:is here Image

I'm doing a quick first 'real' combat with big boy pants on. Looking at the options. I just attacked a lil old 2-3 that was DG'ed by air, the Japs elected not use supply as the unit was likely dead anyway and would be on the max column table no matter what based on odds with…

Ist das Schwerpunk?

Just finished another year of my Vassal debut against Norman with this fascinating game. A year of fluctuating fortunes for the Allied cause. Bourbons started year with a mean event card which sent Eugene off to the War Council for a year (ie he sits off-board -unless Vienna attacked) Sods also stole initiative this year getting to play first on Campaign phase. Lots of maneuvering in Hapsburg territories…

Just three weeks away from the KublaCon (San Francisco) game auction....   Highly recommended if you live anywhere near Northern California.  Good quality collectable wargames at reasonable (not E-Bay) prices.... There should be more than 400 lots with (I imagine) around 300 being consim games. Starts at 10:00 AM on Sunday, May 27th, at the SF airport Hyatt Regency.

text Sharing the excitement!
2012-05-07T01:34:15.000Z

This weekend saw no gaming from me, but I did manage to read the rulebooks for "World at War", "Nuklear Winter 68", and "Fighting Formations: Grossdeutschland", all of which were a pleasure to read, easily understood, and left me itching to get the games on the table.

Unfortunately gaming time was lacking over the weekend, but I did manage to bring the games to my local games store, which is predominantly a tabletop/miniatures gaming location. Showing off the above games to my…
